Academy 2019/2020 Overview

About the Academy

At Dalkey United our youngest age groups participate in the club’s “Academy”. The Academy provides a fun and friendly environment to allow young children the freedom, time and confidence to build football skills and develop a love of the sport. Our volunteer coaches will encourage and support your child so that they have fun, make friends and become enthusiastic young footballers.

The focus of training for our 2015 and 2014 children is fun ball-based games to develop their coordination and build their skills. As children progress, our 2013 and 2012 groups continue to focus on skill development and play small-sided matches. Dalkey United children do not play in inter-club leagues until the age of 8 (i.e. 2011 children in the 2018-19 season), so that they have plenty of time to learn the game without any sense of “competitive” pressure.

Academy age groups

The Academy is organised in groups based on the year in which children are born. For the 2019-20 season, our youngest age group is children born in 2015. Academy age groups are also available for children born in 2014, 2013 and 2012. Children born in 2016 will be welcome to join the Academy from autumn 2020.

Training location and times

Academy training takes place on Saturday mornings on the astro pitch at Castlepark School sports centre. Training commences for the season on Saturday, September 7th. Coaches will confirm breaks for Halloween, Christmas and Easter in advance of these holidays. The 2019-20 season will conclude at the end of May 2020. Training times are as follows:

Age group

Training time @ Castlepark

2015 children

09:00 – 09:45

2014 children

09:00 – 09:45

2013 children

09:00 – 10:00

2012 children

10:00 – 11:00

Please make every effort to have your child at training a few minutes BEFORE their training session starts. It is highly disruptive for coaches when children arrive at training late.

Joining the Academy

If your child would like to give the Academy a try, please contact the relevant age group contact in advance of attending your first training session so that they know you will be at training. Children are welcome to join at any point in the year.

If you are new to Dalkey United in September 2019, there is no need to formally register your child for the first few weeks of training – come along on Saturday mornings and see if your child enjoys themselves. In order to support the running of the club, provide training locations and equipment and to ensure that your child is fully insured, we ask you to officially register your child via the “easypayments” tab BEFORE the end of September. The fee for new children joining in autumn 2019 for the 2019-20 season is €180. This fee covers football training from September 2019 to May 2020.

Fees for returning players

Children who played with Dalkey United in the Winter and Spring of 2019 season paid a fee for the calendar year 2019. They do not therefore have to pay a registration fee until January 2020. Details of fees for returning players will be communicated closer to that time.

Coaches share pertinent information related to the Academy with parents via Whatsapp groups. Please contact your child’s age group coach directly and they will add you to the appropriate group. Castlepark is an all-weather pitch so we play in almost all conditions. Please assume that training goes ahead every week unless you hear differently from a coach via Whatsapp.

Clothing and footwear

Dalkey United Academy training shirts will be provided for those children who have registered on the website by mid-autumn. These will be handed out at training. Please note that it is not essential that your child wears their club shirt to training.

A pair of shin pads is essential to avoid bumps and bruises.

It is not necessary for your child to wear “proper” football boots – runners are perfectly OK. If your child does want to get football boots, please buy boots with flat “pimpled” soles – i.e. not studs or blades. Studs / blades are not allowed on the Castlepark astroturf and can be the cause of accidental injuries.

During the winter months, please ensure that your child is well wrapped up – hats and gloves are often essential. Children should wear proper wet gear on rainy days.

Lots of lost property accumulates through the year. Items found will be photographed and circulated via Whatsapp. Please ensure that your child’s name is labelled on hats, coats, water bottles etc.

Bathroom breaks

Please ensure that your child has gone to the bathroom prior to football training. There are bathrooms in the Castlepark sports centre, adjacent to the pitch. Coaches cannot bring children to the bathroom.

PLEASE get involved!

Dalkey United is a volunteer-based, community club. It is essential that new parents get involved each year, particularly as coaches. Coaching requires no prior experience or football knowledge; all we require is that new coaches get Garda vetting. We have a straightforward coaching plan that is easy to pick up; all you need to bring is a good sense of humour and a little patience! We would greatly appreciate if a few parents would volunteer to join our coaching team this year, particularly for the 2015 and 2012 age groups. Trust us, coaching is far more rewarding than standing on the sidelines and it is much warmer on the pitch when winter comes! Please contact any of our coaches if you would like to get involved.

If you are not in a position to get involved this season, we ask parents of our younger age groups (particularly parents of 2015 and 2014 children) to remain pitch-side during Academy training sessions, in case their child needs the bathroom at any point or gets a bang from a ball!

We hope that your child has a fantastic experience with Dalkey United this season. Don’t hesitate to contact the coaches with any queries or questions that you may have.
